Is a Luxury Travel Advisor Worth It? What I Found Out at Kiawah Island

A Better Anniversary Trip, and a Better Way to Plan Travel

Isabel and I try to get away for a couple of days each year for our anniversary. Since moving to North Carolina, we’ve done a handful of trips, Lake Toxaway, Beaufort, and a few others. All good in their own way, but nothing that really stood out.

This year was our fifth anniversary, so I wanted it to feel different. I also used it as an opportunity to plan the trip through my travel advisory business and see, firsthand, how much value the process actually adds.

I’ll be honest, I went into it a bit skeptical. I’ve always booked my own travel, like most people. The “luxury travel advisor” model can sound like marketing more than substance. I wanted to test that assumption.

Choosing Kiawah

With a November 1 anniversary, timing is tricky. The North Carolina coast can be cool, and longer drives don’t make much sense for a short trip. I set a simple constraint, within four hours, near the water, and comfortable enough to match the occasion.

Kiawah Island, South Carolina fit.

We had been to Charleston before and never came away particularly impressed. Nice, but not memorable. Kiawah, just down the road, felt like an unknown. That made it interesting.

I narrowed it down to two properties: The Dunlin, an Auberge resort on the river, and The Sanctuary at Kiawah Island on the beach. Both are top-tier and part of the advisor network I now work within. I chose The Sanctuary for the beachfront setting and the weather window.

What Changed With Advisor Access

The difference started after booking.

Through the network, I was connected directly to the hotel’s concierge team. They were responsive, proactive, and already aware we were celebrating our anniversary. When dinner reservations showed limited availability online, they stepped in and secured better times at both restaurants we wanted, including the Ocean Room.

We were also eligible for a room upgrade, if available, along with daily breakfast credits and a property credit. At check-in, we were upgraded to an ocean-view club room with two balconies, one facing sunrise, the other sunset. A chilled bottle of champagne and a handwritten note were waiting in the room.

None of this came at a higher price than booking online. When I compared, the base rate was the same, but the overall experience was materially better. If I had tried to recreate it on my own, it would have cost more.

The Weekend Itself

Once we settled in, the trip unfolded easily.

We rented bikes and rode under canopies of live oaks to Freshfields Village, stopping for coffee and a few shops along the way. The bike paths around Kiawah are extensive and make exploring the island simple and relaxed.

One afternoon we went over to The Dunlin and rented kayaks. Paddling through the river and along oyster beds, with birds moving all around, ended up being one of the highlights of the trip.

Mornings were quiet, long walks on the beach, followed by breakfast at the hotel. Evenings were a mix of more formal dining and casual meals, depending on how we felt. One night we cancelled a reservation and had the concierge find us something simpler at the last minute. No friction, just handled.

It was an easy, well-paced weekend, exactly what you want from a short anniversary trip.

What I Took Away

The biggest shift for me wasn’t the upgrades or the perks, though those were real. It was how much smoother everything felt when the right relationships were in place.

Access matters. Communication matters. Having someone on the inside, even in a small way, changes how a trip comes together.

I used to think of travel advisors as something reserved for complicated itineraries or big, expensive trips. After this, I see it differently. When you’re already spending meaningful money on a place, especially for something like an anniversary, it makes sense to get the full value of that spend.

Moving Forward

This trip gave me a clearer picture of what I want to build through JPL Expeditions.

Not just booking trips, but helping people get more out of the trips they are already planning to take. Better rooms when available, better timing, better communication, and a smoother experience from start to finish.

We arrived Saturday and left Monday morning. Simple trip. But easily the best anniversary getaway we’ve had.

And a useful reminder that sometimes the difference is not where you go, but how you plan it.
